LYNN REDGRAVE – An Appreciation

"I think we've all aspired to become better and better as actors because the bar was set so extraordinarily high."

I had the great pleasure of meeting Lynn Redgrave in 1988 in Los Angeles. Lynn called me to help her write a section about the Alexander Technique in her biography "This is Living". She was a very personable, humorous and gentle woman, who was extremely insightful and sharp with her ideas. We developed a liking for each other and a collaborative spirit. Her great generosity and her desire to share her artistic knowledge sparked a few events together.

In 1989 Lynn participated as guest speaker in a course I taught for UCLA Extension "The Meeting of Body and Mind in Acting and Directing". That same year, she granted me a short interview for my AlexanderTech Works Newsletter about her experience with the Alexander Technique in acting. I had the joy to see her acting on stage in her one-woman show about her father "Shakespeare for My Father" and as Mme. De Merteuil in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses", both unforgettable experiences. I am including links to the original article as well as the appreciation written in the Los Angeles Times by my colleague Charles McNulty. I will miss terribly Lynn's light in my life, her force as an actress, and the enormous inspiration that she gave me to go on.
