For
the past few years Jean-Louis Rodrigue has
taught period movement classes for the actors and costume designers
at the UCLA Department of Theater,
illuminating the style and manners of the 17th and 18th century.
Internationally known for his unique style of movement training
and choreography, Rodrigue was invited by coach Larry
Moss and film director Charles Shyer to
prepare Academy Award winner Hilary Swank for
the feature film Affair of the Necklace. In the film, Hilary portrays
Jeanne De La Motte-Valois, a countess at the court of Versailles
in 18th century France.
Hilary
and I worked for weeks to find the characters natural impulses.
In full costume, I was able to help Hilary transform her posture
and carriage, and I taught her to move with elegance and poise
as if she was from that historical period.
Charles
Shyer was so impressed with Hilarys preparation
that he decided to bring Rodrigue on location in Prague to coach
all the leads including Simon Baker, Jonathan
Pryce, and Joely Richardson. Rodrigue also made a video
recording of every period movement and etiquette detail in the
whole film as reference for the actors and the director.
