Embodying the Character

Embodying the Character Using Animal Studies and Images
with the Alexander Technique

with Jean-Louis Rodrigue & Kristof Konrad

I really like to look into the physical acting characteristics of my character, because it helps me to transform. The Alexander Technique helps me to burrow into roles like gay cowboys and drug addicts by focusing on my posture, movement, and presence.

Workshop Description

This is an advanced workshop especially designed to teach actors how to transform into and embody a character. Jean-Louis and Kristof both share the belief that actors must see and feel the world through the eyes and bodies of animals. The study of animals enables actors to act and react in new ways and to enrich and expand their own physical and emotional world, which includes the discovery of new, surprising ways of moving and acting.

In this intensive, you’ll focus on finding the physical matrix of the character, a “hook” or an “anchor” which clearly expresses the stance, the walk, the gestures, and the psychological and emotional life of the character within the given circumstances. We find the body that corresponds not only to the logic of the text, but also its rhythms and energy, which allows the words to be spoken with greater ease; the voice (and its energy and music) become a direct reflection of the body and both become integrated.

Jean-Louis and Kristof immediately create a level of trust and comfort in teaching this technique which allows all of us in the class to open up to the learning experience.

With the best of intentions, the job of acting can become a display of accumulated bad habits, trapped instincts and blocked energies. Working with the Alexander Technique to untangle the wires has given me sightings of another way: mind and body, work and life together. Real imaginative freedom.
